What to eat in Negeri Sembilan: Fish Noodle Soup

(This is the second part of my Negeri Sembilan series. The first part is here)

Hot soup and rainy evenings are a good combination.

One cools you down the other warms you up. Bliss. So I was in Seremban (the capital of Negeri Sembilan) for a holiday and it rained the evening I arrived despite the entire journey being sunny. Go figure.

Anyway, it was close to dinner time by the time lodgings were settled. From the shortlist (yes, I do make shortlists to save time), Bo Kee And You - a restaurant specialising in fish noodle soup - was chosen.

Not many patrons when I arrived but it soon filled up as the evening wore on. What else to order other than the specialty? Added on some house-made fried tofu and deep-fried squid to bulk up the meal.

The orders arrived in quick succession. Tofu was nicely done but tasted so-so. It is what you expect tofu to eat like. The squid however was good, crunchy batter with a tender center, the mark of good fried food.

What about the noodles? For one, the portion is huge.
I ordered a bowl for two persons, but I wonder how big an appetite these two persons need to finish a two-person order. It is that big.

Bo Kee And You speciality
Piping hot soup on a cold evening
The dish looks appetising too. A bowl of milky broth with deep-fried fish meat winking under the garnish of spring onions. Served piping hot, the peppery soup was comfortingly piquant on a cold evening. The fried fish – ikan haruan – is nice though I had hoped there would be more fish.

The highlight of the restaurant though was at a space next to the kitchen. Hundreds of the fish were kept in tanks, waiting to be caught and cooked for service.

You know the food is going to be fresh with the effort going into keeping the fish alive until the last moment.

Finish your food or their deaths are in vain
This does raise the thought these animals are just waiting for death. I do suppose that is why we all should finish our food, to respect the life lost for our sustenance and nourishment.

My third post on eating there is all about BBQ chicken grilled over open flame. Tasty. #makanalls
