Soupy and Porky Goodness
Update Nov 2025: Unsure if this stall is still open. Do let me know if it is!
There area days I am absolutely craving for bowl of comforting soup. Slurping on the liquid goodness fills the tummy with warmth and warms the insides of the heart.
It is like a teddy bear hug to the soul.
One of my favorite soups to savor is salted vegetable pork soup. This is a classic Chinese soup dish. The soup is choke full of tender sliced pork, preserved mustard greens and silky-soft tofu. The pork provides the richness, the salted vegetables give its salty-green kick while the tofu's softness cuts through all that rich palate.
A good version at this dish is available at the Golden Shine Cafe near Sungai Nibong. It is a stall at the coffee shop which attracts a sizeable lunch crowd due to its location near the industrial area of Penang.
On the day I went, the crowd was already filling up the tables. I quickly went to the stall to place my usual order of pork slices, tofu and meat balls. The preserved veggies come standard. I declined the pork offal on offer but there are many who believe the dish is not complete without these organs. To each their own, as I always say.
I complemented the soup with a soy-sauce braised egg and rounded lunch with a bowl of yam rice.
On the first slurp, the world became well again. Rich porky broth inter-played with the savory-salty vegetable flavor gave a complexity to a dish based on simple ingredients. The braised egg and tofu provided contrasting tender bites.
My choice of yam rice, instead of white, was a perfect foil to with its earthy tones. The aroma of dried shrimp permeated the rice whose marine-tones perfectly blended together with the soup. A small saucer of a dark red chili sauce cleanse the palate for each bite. Heavenly.
Everything ended up in the tummy of a happy man. I left with a full stomach and light step. #makanalls
